About

My First Day at Gay High School is a Gacha Lifeviral video and image depicting a character, clad in a verdant shirt and identified as Charlie, articulating, "It's my initial day at gay high school, and I truly hope they remain unaware of my heterosexuality." The earliest documented upload of this particular video surfaced on YouTube during the year 2020, subsequently achieving widespread recognition in the ensuing years. This particular piece of internet culture makes a direct allusion to the popular YouTuber known as Slimecicle.

Origin

On the twenty-second day of February in the year 2020, a YouTube creator by the moniker ballslord43 (also recognized as @centipedegrrrl on the social media platform Twitter) disseminated a video that bore the title, "straight in a gay school lunch club glmm." This particular piece, which is an animation created using the Gacha Life software, showcases an individual named Charlie attending his very first day at what is referred to as "gay high school," harboring a wish that his heterosexual identity would not be discovered. Subsequently, a pair of other characters entered the visual field and proceeded to mock him, referring to him disparagingly as a "stupid breeder" and a "bitch boy." Over a span of three years, this video accumulated approximately six thousand four hundred views (as illustrated below).

On the fifteenth of April in the year 2021, a still image of Charlie, extracted from the aforementioned video, was uploaded to the subreddit /r/GachaLifeCringe. This particular post garnered a substantial amount of support, receiving over eight hundred and sixty upvotes within a two-year period (as depicted below). Furthermore, it was shared by a Tumblr user known as campyvillain on the twenty-sixth of May, subsequently amassing in excess of six thousand "notes" (a form of engagement on Tumblr) during the equivalent timeframe.

Spread

The visual content continued its dissemination throughout the subsequent years. On the twenty-eighth of May in 2021, a Twitter user identified as @reactjpg shared the image, which subsequently attracted approximately three hundred and ninety likes over a two-year duration. On the same day, another Twitter user, @agitoutprising, posted the image, prompting a response from the YouTuber Slimecicle who exclaimed, "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS." This particular exchange was then re-shared by the Tumblr user parking-lot-enthusiast on that very day, resulting in over one thousand eight hundred notes being collected within a two-year span (as evidenced below).

The meme gradually became increasingly intertwined with the persona of Slimecicle, whose given name is coincidentally also Charlie. On the eleventh of February in 2022, an individual on Reddit posted a meme to the /r/Slimecicle subreddit, which involved a digitally manipulated image of Slimecicle positioned outside of a gay high school. This particular creation garnered in excess of four hundred and fifty upvotes over the course of one year. Subsequently, on the nineteenth of March, a TikTok creator by the handle @parrotlert uploaded an animated rendition that drew inspiration from the meme, achieving over two point nine million views within a one-year period (as can be seen below). A still image extracted from this video subsequently achieved widespread popularity across various platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, during that same year.

On the eighth of September, Slimecicle took to Twitter to post a statement, declaring, "I did NOT go to gay high school, but if I did it was not my intention. I also firmly believe the students would not realize im straight either way. Thank you all." This particular tweet garnered upwards of eighty thousand likes within a nine-month interval. He further elaborated by sharing the meme within a comment, adding, "it looks pretty photoshopped to me and I have yet to see proof of my face in the gay yearbook" (as demonstrated below, on the left). On that same day, Twitter users @Holographicros3 and @NELS0NSPRlNG published fan artwork depicting Slimecicle in a gay high school setting, accumulating over two thousand three hundred and ten thousand likes, respectively, within the same timeframe (as illustrated below, in the center and to the right).

This particular meme also served as the catalyst for numerous reinterpreted artistic creations that referenced it (please refer to the section titled 'Various Examples'). Its proliferation persisted throughout the year 2023. On the twenty-fifth of March in 2023, a Tumblr user known as spoofi shared a piece of artwork that garnered more than four hundred notes within a three-month period (as shown below). Subsequently, on the second of May, a Twitter user by the name of @centipedegrrrl posted a rendition of the meme, commenting, "I've never seen the rest of the images but now 'hey dude wanna get men' has entered my lexicon already," which subsequently received upwards of twenty-eight thousand likes in the span of one month.
