Fat Joe Faces $20 Million Lawsuit: Former Hypeman Alleges Sex Trafficking, Coercion, and Abuse Involving Minors
Fat Joe's former hypeman, Terrance "T.A." Dixon, initiated a significant legal action against the rapper in federal court on Thursday. Dixon alleges coercive labor practices, financial fraud, sexual manipulation, violent intimidation, and psychological coercion by his former boss, Joseph Antonio Cartagena. Dixon contends that the celebrated hip-hop artist, known for hits like "What's Luv?", leveraged his fame while undermining Dixon's substantial contributions—essential to the rapper's success and brand—by deliberately suppressing and erasing them. Dixon seeks $20 million in compensation.
The 157-page complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, details disturbing accusations regarding Fat Joe's alleged sexual relations with individuals, including minors, prompting a trigger warning on the first page.
For 16 years, Dixon served as Fat Joe's hypeman, a crucial element in hip-hop performances, amplifying the artist's presence and boosting the overall show. His contributions extended to songwriting and backing vocals on notable tracks like "Congratulations," "Ice Cream," and "Money Over Bitches." The complaint asserts that Dixon had a unique perspective on the rapper's off-stage activities.
Dixon, represented by Tyrone Blackburn, a prominent figure in high-profile litigation, including a case against Sean "Diddy" Combs. In February 2024, Blackburn initiated a suit concerning sexual assault allegations against Diddy. This action, led by Blackburn, prompted investigations at Combs' mansions.
Dixon claims in the lawsuit that Fat Joe exerted pressure on him, forcing him into humiliating sexual acts under duress and surveillance. He further asserts that the rapper coerced him into over 4,000 such acts to maintain his position.
Shockingly, the complaint alleges that Dixon witnessed Fat Joe engaging in sexual acts with underage individuals (15 and 16 years old). The suit identifies three girls, including a 16-year-old Dominican girl in New York, who allegedly engaged in oral sex and other sexual acts in exchange for cash, clothing, and cell phone expenses. The complaint also details the cases of a Caucasian female non-citizen and a Latina female. The complaint describes Fat Joe's supposed relationship with these minors, including financial support, trips, and even a Brazilian Butt Lift for one of the girls.
According to the complaint, the defendant's close relationships with the underage girls prompted discussions of emotional distress in one recorded conversation.
Fat Joe is represented by celebrity attorney Joe Tacopina, known for defending high-profile cases. In a statement to Variety, Tacopina characterized the lawsuit as retaliation, designed to divert attention from a previous lawsuit and describing the allegations as fabrications. The statement highlights law enforcement awareness and Fat Joe's intention to defend himself against these accusations.
Other defendants include Pete "Pistol Pete" Torres and Richard "Rich Player" Jospitre, identified as key figures in Fat Joe's alleged "criminal enterprise." The suit asserts claims under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, RICO, and other relevant New York and Florida laws, including unjust enrichment and money laundering.
The suit also targets Roc Nation, claiming complicity in concealing Dixon's intellectual property rights and royalty interests, to deter his claims.
The lawsuit details alleged tax fraud schemes by the defendants intended to conceal wage theft, inflate Dixon's tax liability, and instigate audits. Evidence, including a whistleblower accountant and recorded calls, support the claims.
Fat Joe had previously sued Dixon for social media posts alleging the rapper facilitated sex with a minor across state lines. That lawsuit also named Dixon's attorney.
Dixon stated in an interview that he is pursuing this action to hold Fat Joe accountable. He described the experience as one of sustained sexual coercion and psychological manipulation, occurring across numerous locations.
Dixon's lawsuit details further sexual abuse, occurring not just on a personal level, but within the context of Fat Joe's business practices. Dixon claims the acts, involving female performers and minors, took place on Market America's yacht and at their property. Fat Joe allegedly orchestrated repeated sexual encounters, often while watching, recording or directing these encounters. The suit highlights that security personnel and the company's entourage were present, effectively supporting the inference that such actions were deliberately facilitated and covered up.
Fat Joe allegedly used veiled threats, like "You love your family, right?" and "Fall back in 48 hours," to intimidate Dixon.
Despite high-profile political affiliations, including interactions with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, Fat Joe faced a scandal in 2010 involving allegations of sexual assault at a Wisconsin event. At the time, his lawyer called the accuser a "pretender groupie."
