LGBTQIA+ in GR
Over a decade ago, The Advocate magazine recognized Grand Rapids as one of America's Gayest Cities, in a featured piece exploring the "per capita queerness of some less expected locales."
In the years that have passed, Grand Rapids has only become more LGBTQ+-friendly. As one of the safest cities in the U.S. for LGBTQIA+ singles, the city was recognized, and it also earned a flawless score on the 2023 Municipal Equality Index, which takes into account how inclusive cities are of LGBTQIA+ residents.
Gathering spaces within the community that are new, such as the LGBTQIA+ bar known as General Wood Shop in addition to the sober-minded Lotus Brew Coffee/Dry Bar, are now among the notable and iconic destinations, such as the Apartment Lounge, which is considered to be Michigan's most established LGBTQIA+ bar, together with Rumors Night Club, having served a diverse demographic since 2003.
