About Frankfurt and its gay life
Frankfurt am Main, Germany's fifth-largest municipality (with over 2 million in the greater metropolitan area), boasts a history extending over a millennium. Presently, it's prominently known as one of the globe's pivotal financial capitals.
Notable landmarks within the city include the historic Römer town hall, the Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus), the Goethe House in the old town, and the Palmengarten botanical gardens in the Westend district.
The heart of Frankfurt's gay scene is traditionally centered in the city center, specifically the area surrounding Schäfergasse and Alte Gasse. This area includes a small plaza, commemorating the gay writer Klaus Mann since 1995.
Key annual events include the Frankfurt Gay Pride (CSD Frankfurt) in summer, the Frankfurter Book Fair in autumn, and the FVV Xmas LGBT sports event in December.
In the early 1950s, Frankfurt unfortunately acquired a somber reputation due to the Frankfurt Homosexual Trials. Numerous gay men were apprehended, accused, and convicted, with some tragically succumbing to the pressure. A judge implicated in these proceedings had a past history of zealous persecution against homosexuals even during the Nazi era.
To honour those persecuted by the Nazis, the Frankfurter Engel (Angel of Frankfurt) memorial was constructed in 1994 on Klaus-Mann-Platz. This memorial, a pioneering effort in Germany, marked a significant milestone.
