It certainly presents itself as an extended gay joke, it truly does. With excessively theatrical queens, men inspecting one another in a restroom, every scene appears incomplete without some form of gay insinuation.

Naturally, with a movie entitled Nine Dead Gay Guys, what else would one anticipate...?

The picture lacks humor overall. There are occasional instances that might elicit a brief chuckle, yet ultimately, each jest is as painfully awkward as its predecessor. There's barely a storyline to be found within the movie; each scene feels as though it's been incorporated solely to introduce yet another joke, another eccentric character, or merely to serve as filler. It so blatantly imitates its stylistic approach from productions such as Lock, Stock.... yet it neglects to effectively seize upon the elements - the essence of character - that rendered those films exceptional.

Byron has depth, as does Kenny. However, beyond them? The remaining characters are merely stereotypes. It is ineffectual, and I couldn't muster any concern for who these individuals were. Thus, I transitioned into a state of disinterest, arguably the most unfavorable outcome a film can produce.

Nine Dead Gay Guys - the name reveals the essence of it all. From the title, one can gather the film is intended to possess a certain light-heartedness and humor. Indeed, it does. I was literally beaming all throughout the roughly 85 minutes of this bold offering from debut director Ky Mo Lab. Raymond Griffiths virtually dominates the performance as "the desperate dwarf" (strangely, he perpetually evoked images of Val Kilmer), even though everyone participating undeniably carried their weight. Anticipating the subsequent production to arise from the Lab.

I just viewed this via DVD and now must acquire it. It was absolutely adored by me, the acting felt plausible. Since every conceivable sensitivity is purposely assaulted, it calls to mind the underlying attitude evident within Stephen Pickles' insightful book chronicling the pre-AIDS epoch of the nineteen eighties, known as ‘Queens.' A lack of visible genitalia may distress gay viewers more than witnessing their own portrayal for comic effect, but the two characters demonstrate an undeniable appeal, and humorous undertones prevail over explicit pornography. It has previously received commendations at both homosexual and conventional comedy film festivals (most prominently within Montreal and Dublin) and anxious straight reviewers don't need to be concerned that they should feel offended for their fellow homosexual counterparts. It's ultimately a playful jest: presenting a couple of insightful perspectives on well-worn stereotypes as the narrative approaches its resolution, including the point where one character identifies his own burgeoning enjoyment of sexual encounters involving men, as the other goes back to his mother's dwelling.
