Gay Club Key West

Our comprehensive gay travel guide to Key West is compiled from our personal, firsthand experiences. Uncover the vibrant gay scene, including an array of gay bars, pulsating clubs, captivating drag shows, and much more!

Conch! What a wonderfully peculiar word, quite satisfying to say, yet it can sound rather impolite… like a playful curse, such as “you CONCHhead!” or proclaiming, “you're such a CONCH!”…

Beyond the amusement, on this celebrated gay island mecca known as Key West, the term conch is actually a legitimate and cherished nickname bestowed upon its local inhabitants. And rest assured, this community of conchers truly excels at embracing life's pleasures with gusto!

Key West is renowned globally for its remarkably laid-back, accepting, and uniquely queer-friendly atmosphere. Historically, it has always cultivated a distinct identity, partly due to its geographical position as the absolute southernmost point of the United States mainland, thus being somewhat secluded from the rest of Florida. This isolation has fostered Key West's growth as a welcoming haven for an eclectic mix of individuals, encompassing Native Americans, Spanish settlers, formerly enslaved people, notorious pirates, and, naturally, the vibrant LGBTQ community.

Furthermore, it has served as a fertile ground for artistic genius, attracting luminaries such as the openly gay playwright, Tennessee Williams, alongside literary giants like Ernest Hemingway and celebrated author Judy Blume, all of whom found this unassuming island to be their cherished home base. Key West proudly embraces an official motto: “One Human Family”.

We found Key West to be an absolutely delightful destination. An abundance of activities await, with a particularly exciting gay scene flourishing along the lively Duval Street. Having visited Key West on multiple occasions, each trip has been an immensely enjoyable experience. Consequently, we have meticulously crafted this detailed gay guide to Key West, incorporating our personal experiences exploring the finest gay accommodations, reveling in the nightlife at bars and clubs, and providing inspiration for various activities and more.

Guided by a truly World-Class Drag Queen, you'll be led through the heart of Key West's gay bars, all while dancing and singing along the way. It's an experience brimming with fun and offers a fantastic avenue for forging new connections while immersing yourself in the local gay atmosphere.

Key West's Gay Enclave

The primary gay district in Key West is situated around the bustling Duval Street, specifically between Angela and Petronia Streets. You'll immediately recognize this vibrant area thanks to the permanent, unmissable Rainbow Crosswalk. This modest intersection acts as the nucleus of Key West's gay neighborhood, largely organized around three prominent complexes that form a distinct triangular layout. These three major establishments are known as 801 Bourbon, Bourbon St. Pub, and Aqua. Each of these venues houses approximately three to four distinct bars or clubs, which we will elaborate on in detail below.

A few blocks distant from the main Duval Street gay thoroughfare, you'll discover another beloved gay establishment, Bobby's Monkey Bar. We'll provide more information about it shortly, but it was our preferred haunt due to its comfortably relaxed and genuinely friendly ambiance, reminiscent of a classic “local neighborhood dive bar.”

Another aspect we truly appreciate about Key West's gay culture is the prominent presence of its local drag artistry. Every evening, celebrated performers like Miss Sushi and Randy Roberts captivate audiences, and we absolutely adore their performances! We can confidently state that a dull night out on Key West's gay scene has never been a possibility for us!

Gay Resorts in Key West

When it comes to exclusively male gay resorts, Key West proudly presents some of the finest we've had the pleasure of experiencing. The sheer number of options is substantial, prompting us to compile an in-depth guide to the premier gay resorts in Key West, which we highly recommend you explore. For the purposes of this particular guide, we have meticulously selected our top three selections.

A notable observation regarding accommodation choices in Key West is their considerable expense; the island has, by notoriety, become quite tourist-centric and pricey, compelling many local residents to hold down two, or even three, jobs. Therefore, if you're in a position to indulge, you will undoubtedly find yourself in paradise here. Conversely, if you're more budget-conscious, we suggest perusing the listings available on Misterbnb.

Alexander's Guesthouse

Why we adore it

  • A supremely friendly guesthouse welcoming all members of the LGBTQ community
  • Housed within a beautifully restored historic mansion dating back to the 1800s
  • Features the delightfully entertaining Pink Monkey Bar
  • Offers a pool area where clothing is optional

Alexander's Guesthouse distinguishes itself as one of the rare gay guesthouses in Key West that extends a welcome to all individuals within the LGBTQ spectrum aged 18 and above.

Women and their straight allies are equally embraced here! As a result, it generally presents a less overtly "sleazy" or "cruisy" atmosphere compared to establishments like Island House. We found it to be a more subdued and understated alternative.

Every corner and space within Alexander's guesthouse exudes an undeniable charm.

It is situated in a meticulously restored three-story residence built in the distinctive “conch”-style, constructed from wood and elevated on posts - a building technique employed during the 1800s to facilitate air circulation beneath the floorboards. Alexander's is conveniently located just around the corner from Island House and is approximately a fifteen-minute stroll to the principal gay bars and clubs situated on Duval Street.

Alexander's offers a selection of generously proportioned, contemporary rooms, each equipped with exceptionally comfortable king-sized beds, private balconies, and air conditioning (an absolute necessity for my companion, Seby). For those traveling in a group of four, we heartily recommend reserving the stylish and opulent suite named “The Apartment”. This suite boasts a bathroom designed with a “spa” inspired aesthetic, a private sun deck, and a private covered balcony offering picturesque views of Fleming Street.

Communal amenities include several sunning decks where clothing is optional, an inviting outdoor swimming pool, and a relaxing Jacuzzi. Furthermore, they host a complimentary cocktail Happy Hour at their aptly named on-site bar, the Pink Monkey Bar, which also serves as an excellent venue for connecting with fellow LGBTQ travelers, and for witnessing Seby showcase his card “magic” tricks to other guests… An interesting observation was the composition of the clientele; nearly all were repeat visitors who had previously stayed at Alexander's at least two or three times before - a testament to its enduring appeal and a primary reason why it remains one of the few Key West hotels on Tripadvisor to proudly hold a rare, perfect 5/5 Excellent rating across numerous reviews!

The Island House

Why we adore it

  • An unparalleled clothing-optional paradise for gay men!
  • Features lively pool parties every Wednesday and Sunday
  • Offers numerous areas conducive to cruising
  • Equipped with a pool, gym, sauna, and steam room

The Island House undeniably holds the reputation as perhaps THE most iconic gay resort across the entirety of Florida! It serves as a veritable haven for gay men, hosting pool parties that are renowned for their uninhibited and exhilarating nature.

We attended the Sunday pool party for brunch, and honestly, it was quite an experience - I don't believe we had ever witnessed such a significant concentration of phalluses in a single space before!

We also truly appreciate the wonderfully diverse clientele at Island House, attracting gay men from all age groups.

At the Island House, guests have the option to either stay overnight as a hotel patron or, as we did, visit for the day by purchasing a Guest Pass.

Regarding accommodation choices, a variety of options are available, ranging from the more basic private rooms with street vistas to the considerably more opulent luxury superior rooms. Should you wish to truly indulge, or if you are traveling with a group of companions, we strongly recommend splurging on the exclusive two-bedroom apartment. This accommodation is spread across two levels, features its own private entrance, dedicated parking (a notable rarity in Key West!), and a private porch.

The communal facilities are exceptionally comprehensive, catering to virtually every desire a gay man might have! This includes a 24-hour gymnasium and fitness center, fully equipped with an extensive selection of free weights and cardiovascular machines, including state-of-the-art elliptical trainers. Amusingly, we found the name of their “five-man gang shower” to be particularly humorous… we shall leave the rest to your vivid imagination!

The Island House also boasts a highly active steam room, a Finnish sauna, and a spacious sundeck… all of which, naturally, permit clothing-optional enjoyment! The outdoor poolside area at Island House is arguably the most convivial, serving as the central gathering point for most guests throughout the day, complemented by a 24-hour cafe and bar.

The Gardens Hotel

Why we adore it

  • A distinctive establishment with a focus on wine
  • Conveniently situated just around the corner from the main gay street
  • A tranquil, adults-only hotel that welcomes a mixed clientele
  • Features a breathtakingly lush garden area adjacent to the pool

The Gardens Hotel represented a delightful splurge for us during our visit to Key West. It stands out as one of our preferred choices for couples, effectively fulfilling all our expectations. Nestled within a charmingly antique building, it enjoys a prime location just a stone's throw from the primary gay establishments on Duval Street.

Despite its proximity to the vibrant nightlife, it emanates an atmosphere of a secluded sanctuary: absolute tranquility prevails here after dark! While Duval Street becomes quite animated in the evenings, my companion, who is a light sleeper, experienced a remarkably restful night's sleep at The Gardens.

The Gardens Hotel aptly earns its name from the expansive, verdant garden area that encircles the swimming pool. My companion, Seby, drew a comparison to entering the biblical Garden of Eden as we savored our breakfast, serenaded by the melodic chirping of birds overhead. Furthermore, The Gardens operates as a “wine hotel,” possessing a substantial wine cellar and an innovative self-service wine tasting system integrated within their “D'vine Wine Gallery”, accessible via a dedicated keycard.

The guest accommodations at The Gardens Hotel are remarkably spacious, featuring private verandahs and ample living space. We particularly recommend securing one of their five uniquely designed cottages; four of these boast their own private swimming pools and bathrooms adorned with marble and equipped with Jacuzzi tubs. Our personal favorite is the “Eyebrow Cottage,” strategically positioned in a secluded corner of the property within a private, walled, and gated enclosure.

While not exclusively a “gay” hotel, The Gardens warmly welcomes all guests aged 16 and above. Given its close proximity to the gay bars along Duval Street, it has consistently been a popular selection among LGBTQ travelers, particularly those in relationships. Additionally, it proudly embraces its status as a pet-friendly establishment, offering over an acre of lush tropical foliage to allow our cherished furry companions the freedom to roam and explore to their heart's content!

Embark on a Sunset Cruise with Your Beloved…

Florida is undeniably home to some of the most spectacular sunsets imaginable. There, we've stated it! In Key West, you are virtually guaranteed a breathtaking vista every single evening. One of the most romantically inclined ways to appreciate this daily spectacle is by embarking on a sunset cruise. We participated in one such excursion that featured complimentary champagne and delectable hors d'oeuvres aboard a sophisticated and elegant sailboat. It was a truly unforgettable moment!

The Premier Gay Bars in Key West

Considering the relatively small size of the island, Key West boasts a surprisingly expansive gay scene. The area is characterized by three main gay complexes, each pulsating with its own distinct party atmosphere. We have provided a summary of these establishments below, alongside a few other notable venues such as Bobby's Monkey Bar, which is conveniently situated a few blocks away from the main trio.

Bobby's Monkey Bar

Bobby's is, without question, one of our most cherished gay bars in Key West. It possesses the charm of a classic dive bar, akin to a gay version of the iconic Cheers, where a strong sense of community prevails and everyone seems to know one another. Its welcoming and incredibly friendly atmosphere is precisely why it holds such a special place in our hearts. The proprietor, Bobby himself, is the undeniable lifeblood and soul of the establishment, consistently engaging in conversations with patrons and ensuring that every individual feels like an integral part of a large, cohesive family. They feature karaoke every evening, commencing around 9:30 PM, with an infectious enthusiasm that encourages universal participation and sing-alongs! It genuinely fosters a warm and inviting ambiance… particularly when we serenaded the crowd with a few ABBA hits, eliciting a full bar of enthusiastic sing-alongs from everyone!

Bobby's maintains its operation every evening until approximately 4:00 AM. Its location is at 900 Simonton Street.

801 Bourbon Bar

The 801 stands as a substantial gay complex, prominently situated adjacent to the iconic Rainbow Crosswalk. The 801 Bourbon Bar itself is located on the ground floor, with its sister club situated directly above (more information on this can be found below). This bar serves as an excellent starting point for enjoying a few cocktails to commence the evening's festivities. Its extended operating hours are a significant advantage if you're seeking a relaxed spot to simply socialize and converse with friends well into the early morning hours, say around 2:00 AM. They frequently host themed events that are certainly worth investigating; our personal favorite is their Sunday karaoke session, held between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, primarily because the talented drag queens actively participate, and these incredibly skilled performers absolutely master the art of hosting a hilariously entertaining karaoke party!

The 801 Bourbon Bar remains open nightly until approximately 4:00 AM. It is located at 801 Duval Street.

Bourbon St. Pub

As you navigate your way down the renowned gay stretch of Duval Street, you'll likely find yourself drawn into the Bourbon St. Pub, enticed by the presence of the speedo-clad Bourbon Boys stationed outside. We certainly were! Upon entering, you'll discover what can only be described as a gay man's paradise, particularly the outdoor, male-exclusive “Garden Bar” - a spacious poolside area featuring incredibly attractive, topless staff and those undeniably hot Bourbon Boys performing right on the bar! This venue is celebrated for hosting some of the most risqué parties, including the notorious “Holiday Underwear Party”, the daring “Bone Island Bare It All” event, and a multitude of uninhibited pool parties! For the most up-to-date information, we recommend consulting their Facebook page.

The Bourbon St. Pub typically operates every evening until around 4:00 AM. Its address is 724 Duval Street, conveniently situated directly across the street from 801 Bourbon Bar.

Aqua

Aqua presents itself as “Key West's Best Nightclub.” During our visit on a Saturday evening, we observed that it wasn't quite as crowded as some of the other establishments, although this can fluctuate significantly depending on the specific night of the week you choose to attend. The themed nights are generally the most captivating, as they often feature truly impressive Burlesque performances, particularly during holiday periods like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. The clientele here is wonderfully diverse, comprising individuals of all ages from across the broad spectrum of our magnificent LGBTQ family.

The festivities at Aqua Club 504 commence nightly around 11:00 PM and continue until approximately 3:00 AM. The entrance is located at 504 Angela Street. For those interested in dining, the upstairs establishment, “Poke in the Rear,” offers a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying a meal and is open daily until roughly 11:00 PM.

Saloon 1

Saloon 1 proudly holds the distinction of being Key West's premier bear bar - truly, “where real men come to play”. And play they certainly do… this establishment is unashamedly an all-male venue, the kind of place you patronize with one singular purpose in mind! The very first sight that greeted us upon entering was two gentlemen, adorned only in socks, deeply engrossed in an exceedingly passionate embrace by the bar… Saloon 1 also hosts a variety of engaging themed evenings, including the highly anticipated Friday night “Cock Shock” contest and the popular “Gear Night” held on Saturdays.

Saloon 1 is accessible every evening until approximately 4:00 AM. Its location is directly adjacent to the 801 Bourbon Bar, situated at 504 Petronia Street.

Island House Pool Parties

The Island House is recognized as one of the most renowned gay resorts in South Florida, particularly celebrated for its clothing-optional, male-only pool parties. These exclusive events take place twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Sundays. The Sunday gathering is widely considered the most famous and heavily attended. We joined a group of friends for brunch at this venue. It's an absolutely wild experience! We had an abundance of fun, with numerous exposed genitalia, everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves while basking in the sun, and a few eccentric drag hosts ensuring the crowd remained thoroughly entertained.

The Island House pool parties are scheduled for Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Sundays from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The venue is located at 1129 Fleming Street.

La Te Da Sunday Tea Dance

La Te Da's Sunday “Tea Dance”, while a more laid-back affair compared to its counterpart at Island House, offers an equally vibrant and engaging atmosphere. All individuals are warmly welcomed at the Sunday Tea Dance. The event features a live DJ, often a local radio personality such as DJ Rude Girl or Molly Blue. Each Tea Dance adheres to a specific theme, and tradition dictates that attendees dress accordingly (or perhaps undress!) to match the motif. Many attendees typically commence their day with brunch at Island House before migrating to La Te Da to extend the festivities.

The La Te Da Tea Dance occurs every Sunday between 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM. It is situated at 1125 Duval Street.

Key West Gay Nightclubs

The most prominent gay nightclubs in Key West are conveniently located within the same three complexes that house the majority of the aforementioned bars. Based on our experiences, you are virtually guaranteed an enjoyable evening out regardless of which venue you choose. They are all situated within a very short walking distance of each other, leading many patrons to simply move between the three establishments depending on where the prevailing atmosphere is most appealing. This is precisely how we spent our evening, resulting in a fantastic time followed by a rather unpleasant hangover…

801 Bourbon

The upper level of the 801 Bourbon complex serves as the nightclub section of the venue. Throughout the night, captivating drag shows are presented, interspersed with popular chart hits and energetic Latin pop rhythms. We particularly appreciate the 801 Bourbon club for these performances, and it's evident that many others share this sentiment - when we visited on a Saturday evening, the place was absolutely packed! However, this was in the best possible way. It's also the exclusive stage for the island's most celebrated drag queen - the illustrious Miss Sushi!

The 801 Bourbon club typically becomes lively from around 11:00 PM onwards and continues its revelries until approximately 4:00 AM each night.

Bourbon St. Pub

Once the alluring Bourbon Boys have successfully enticed you into the Garden Bar, we highly recommend exploring the dedicated dancing area within the Bourbon St. Pub building, especially during their male-only “Bare It All” foam parties. The atmosphere is undeniably raucous, and you'll swiftly find yourself making numerous new acquaintances! We find it particularly enjoyable to visit the Bourbon later in the evening, around 2:00 AM, when its various bar and club sections seamlessly merge, and the crowds spill out into the adjacent outdoor pool area. For the female patrons, we suggest looking out for their women-only “Girls Night Out” party held on Tuesdays, running from 5:00 PM until midnight.

The dance parties at the Bourbon St. Pub typically gain momentum from around 11:00 PM and extend until 4:00 AM. The entrance is located at 724 Duval Street.

Aqua Club 504

Aqua proudly promotes itself as “Key West's Best Nightclub.” While our visit on a Saturday night indicated it wasn't as bustling as some of the other clubs, this observation can certainly vary depending on the specific night you choose to attend. The themed evenings are generally the most noteworthy, often featuring particularly impressive Burlesque performances, especially during major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. The clientele is a wonderfully diverse assembly, encompassing individuals of all ages from across the entire spectrum of our vibrant LGBTQ community.

The parties at Aqua Club 504 usually commence in the evening around 11:00 PM and continue until approximately 4:00 AM. The entrance point is situated at 504 Angela Street.

Drag Performances in Key West

Key West is a veritable hub for some of the most exceptional drag artists, including the incredibly amusing Randy Roberts, a star from America's Got Talent, and the esteemed Miss Sushi, recognized by Gaycities as one of their “Best of 2018 Hometown Queens”. Below, we have meticulously curated a list of the most outstanding drag shows in Key West that we wholeheartedly recommend you experience.

For those embarking on their first visit or solo LGBTQ travelers eager to forge friendships quickly and witness the very best of Key West's gay scene, we strongly advocate for participating in a drag tour. These tours are expertly led by charismatic and engaging local guides.

The Crystal Room at La Te Da

The Crystal Room is La Te Da's dedicated Cabaret Theatre, hosting performances nightly. Our personal favorite is Randy Roberts, who we found to be among the funniest and most exceptionally talented female impersonators encountered during our entire trip through Florida. Between his masterful Cher and Bette Midler impersonations, he guarantees to leave you in fits of laughter throughout the entire performance. Securing tickets for this show is an absolute must!

801 Bourbon

We previously highlighted our profound enjoyment of the upstairs club within the 801 Bourbon complex - this enthusiasm stems primarily from the brilliantly comedic “801 Girls” who grace the stage with their performances every evening, starting at 9:00 PM, and again later in the night. It's also at 801 Bourbon where you are most likely to encounter the renowned Miss Sushi, who frequently performs and mingles amongst the patrons - another unmissable highlight of any Key West visit!

Aqua Key West

Each evening, commencing at 7:00 PM, the talented “Aquanettes” present their captivating performances to a seated audience at the Aqua complex. Saturdays are particularly special, featuring three distinct shows scheduled between 7:00 PM and midnight. What makes these shows especially unique is their broad appeal, catering to all age groups and showcasing a truly remarkable cast of queens who are as humble(!), shy(!!), and unbelievably demure(!!!) as they are talented, including performers like Inga, Faith Michaels, Elle Taylor, Jessica Deveraux, and Beatrix Dixie. We strongly suggest booking your tickets in advance online, as they tend to sell out rather rapidly.

Gay Beaches in Key West

While Key West doesn't officially designate a specific "gay beach," the following locations are where you are most likely to encounter a significant LGBTQ presence. For additional inspiration and information, we encourage you to consult our comprehensive guide to the premier gay beaches across the USA.

Higgs Beach

Higgs Beach is the preferred destination for most gay men. The waters here are typically shallow, making it an ideal location for swimming and snorkeling activities. Higgs Beach is situated along Atlantic Boulevard, between Reynolds Street and the White Street fishing pier.

Smathers Beach

Smathers Beach ranks among our most favored beaches in Key West, largely due to its extensive sandy expanse and the invitingly shallow waters. It is conveniently located at the southernmost end of Key West, in close proximity to the airport, just off Roosevelt Boulevard.

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach

This particularly delightful beach has been named in honor of Elizabeth Taylor, who was known to frequent it often with her close friend Tennessee Williams during the 1950s. Unlike the other beaches in the area, Fort Zachary Taylor Beach is characterized by its rocky terrain, so it's advisable to pack a pair of sandals. Fort Zachary Beach is located at 601 Howard England Way.

Gay Pride and Key Events in Key West

Despite its modest size, Key West certainly hosts an impressive array of queer events! A substantial number of these celebrations are meticulously organized by The Key West Business Guild. Below, we have provided a summary of the most significant gay events in Key West that we highly recommend attending should your travel plans coincide with their occurrence:

Key West Pride (June)

Key West Pride is celebrated during the second week of June (with the notable exception of the 2020 Pride event, which was postponed to November). It's an exceptionally fun occasion, featuring a host of entertaining events, such as the comedic performance of “Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche” and stand-up comedy showcases by renowned celebrities like Leslie Jordan. The event culminates in the grand Key West Pride Parade, which commences at the Truman Waterfront, proceeds along Duval Street, and concludes at South Street.

Key West Tropical Heat (August)

Tropical Heat is a four-day summer event exclusively for men, taking place during the second week of August. It encompasses a variety of themed gatherings, including the popular Splash! Pool Party, the daring Bare-only and Underwear Party, and a delightful Drag Brunch. Oh, and remember that infamous Sunday pool party hosted at Island House? Well, during the duration of Tropical Heat, these renowned Island House pool parties transform into the spectacularly energetic Hot Nude Sunday Pool Party!

Womenfest Key West (September)

Womenfest Key West serves as the island's equivalent to Tropical Heat, specifically catering to women, and is recognized as one of the largest lesbian events globally, drawing thousands of attendees annually! This four-day festival is held during the second week of September, coinciding with the Labor Day weekend. The program includes a pool party, a boat party, and vibrant club nights featuring live DJs. Further details can be found on the dedicated Womenfest Facebook page.

Key West Headdress Ball (October)

The Headdress Ball is an eagerly anticipated annual ticketed Cabaret event that takes place in October. It forms an integral part of the Key West Business Guild's yearly fundraising initiatives. Its popularity is immense, frequently resulting in tickets being sold out within mere weeks of their online release! Participants compete for the coveted “Best Headdress” cash prize, with substantial awards for the top three placements: $3,000 for first place, $1,000 for second, and $500 for third.

Bear Weekend (October/November)

Prepare for a robust roar! Key West's most significant bear gatherings descend upon the island during Bear Weekend! This exciting event typically occurs on the final weekend of October and features lively foam parties, a hilariously entertaining “Butch Queen Bar Crawl”, a dedicated Bear Cruise, and the prestigious “Mr Key West Bear” competition. More information can be obtained by visiting the Key West Bear Weekend Facebook Page.

Film Festival (November)

“Passion Meets Paradise!” proudly proclaims the slogan of Key West's esteemed annual film festival, which unfolds in mid-November. This event is truly massive, effectively taking over the entire island. During the daylight hours, the festival showcases a variety of film screenings, prominently featuring a substantial LGBTQ segment. As evening approaches, the enthusiastic film aficionados migrate towards the gay bars along Duval Street, injecting a wonderfully cool and vibrant energy into the local gay scene!

Gay Saunas in Key West

Currently, there are no officially designated gay saunas operating in Key West. However, should you be in search of intimate encounters, the Island House establishment is unequivocally your most advantageous option. This resort caters exclusively to men and embraces a clothing-optional policy (further details are provided above), complete with an on-site sauna, a steam room, and numerous areas conducive to mingling and casual encounters.

The weekends at Island House are particularly renowned, as this is precisely when a considerable number of both local residents and visiting tourists (who may not be registered guests of Island House) avail themselves of the Guest Pass option.

Gay Restaurants in Key West

Key West offers a truly satisfying culinary landscape, boasting a diverse array of restaurants to explore. We have meticulously summarized some of our personal favorites below. Importantly, remember that you are in South Florida, a region where you absolutely must indulge in the iconic Key Lime Pie, among other delectable regional specialties!

La Te Da

We chose to dine at the La Te Da restaurant prior to attending their renowned Randy Roberts cabaret show (we reiterate, this is an experience you absolutely cannot miss while in Key West!), and we found the entire experience to be thoroughly enjoyable. From the engaging and charismatic service staff to the wonderfully amusing Head Chef, the entire team is dedicated to eliciting smiles and ensuring guests feel genuinely welcomed and at ease. They are open throughout the day, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Our top selections from the menu were the Onion Soup and the Hamburger La Te Da - uniquely presented with a side of crispy Shoe String Fries. We also visited for their brunch service and can confidently assert that they prepare one of the most exquisite versions of Eggs Benedict we encountered during our extensive road trip across Florida.

Latitude Restaurant

Latitude Restaurant provided us with one of our most cherished romantic experiences during our time in Key West. This establishment is situated on a private island known as Sunset Key, which is conveniently accessible via a brief boat excursion from Key West. The dining seating is arranged outdoors directly on the sand, enhanced by the soft glow of candlelight, and offering captivating views over the Gulf of Mexico. We timed our visit to coincide with sunset, which rendered those panoramic views exceptionally special. I personally indulged in, and highly recommend, the Pan Roasted Caribbean Lobster Tail, while Seby thoroughly enjoyed the Mushroom Ragu Linguini. We both sampled, and were delighted by, their Key Lime Pie. Although, it must be noted that we enthusiastically tried and loved the Key Lime Pie at virtually every restaurant we patronized throughout South Florida…

New York Pasta Gardens

Our discovery of the New York Pasta Gardens was entirely serendipitous, occurring while we were browsing Tripadvisor for highly-rated dining establishments conveniently located near Duval Street. The restaurant is set within a picturesque outdoor patio, adorned with exquisitely sculpted, Instagram-worthy fountains and frequented by a few resident tropical birds that obligingly pose for photographs. They are particularly celebrated for their exquisite pasta dishes, impeccably fresh fish, and expertly prepared steaks. Seby was utterly captivated by their linguine with clam sauce, while my personal preference leaned towards the succulent fillet mignon. And, of course, the obligatory key lime pie was the perfect dessert! Overall, it was an exceptionally satisfying dining experience, marked by delicious cuisine and highly attentive service.

Activities in Key West

Esteemed travelers, this westernmost edge of South Florida is intrinsically designed for witnessing magnificent sunsets! The sunsets experienced here are, without exaggeration, among the most breathtaking we have ever encountered in all our extensive journeys. We strongly advocate for making this a paramount activity during your visit, whether you choose to observe it from Mallory Square or opt for a romantic sunset cruise; ensure you witness this daily spectacle each evening - it is truly a magnificent sight! Naturally, Key West offers a plethora of other activities, so we have helpfully summarized a few of our personal favorites below:

Sunset Cruise

Our most cherished “sunset experience” in Key West, which we enthusiastically recommend to fellow gay couples, involves witnessing the sunset aboard a leisurely cruise. While numerous sunset cruises are available, we strongly advise opting for one of the more premium options, such as the Schooner America sunset cruise, which was our chosen excursion. The higher price point generally correlates with a less crowded experience and, importantly, a significantly superior quality of accompanying beverages and snacks - think champagne served with fresh shrimp, yes, absolutely!

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

The sunset in Key West is so profoundly renowned that a dedicated celebration is orchestrated nightly in Mallory Square! This festivity commences approximately two hours prior to the sunset and features a vibrant array of arts and crafts exhibitors, tempting food carts, and engaging street performers who entertain the assembled crowds gathered to witness the spectacle. This location proved to be one of our favorite vantage points for observing the sunset in Key West, largely due to the unique and picturesque backdrop provided by the cruise ships in the distance.

Shopping on Duval Street

In addition to serving as the vibrant epicenter of Key West's gay scene, Duval Street also presents an excellent opportunity for leisurely strolling and indulging in some retail therapy. It hosts a wide assortment of unique boutique shops, art galleries, souvenir stores, and novelty shops offering some of the most humorously designed T-shirts we have ever encountered! Furthermore, the premier gay-oriented shops are conveniently located along Duval Street, including prominent establishments like InTouch, Graffitti, and Leather Master. It is also quite fascinating to observe Duval Street during the daytime - a starkly different atmosphere compared to the evening when the bars begin to open their doors.

Foodie Tour

We consistently find that food serves as an excellent conduit for understanding the local culture in any new destination we visit. Each dish we savor carries a unique narrative. We participated in the Secret Food Tour, which commenced with a guided exploration of Key West led by a local expert, delving into the area's architectural heritage and offering valuable insights into its historical context. Subsequently, we journeyed to Bahama Village (located approximately three hours from Key West), a favored retreat for locals seeking an escape from the city, where we gained further knowledge about the island's historical culinary influences.

Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory

My companion Seby has a profound fondness for butterflies! Particularly the larger, brightly colored blue varieties. Consequently, you can only imagine his sheer delight upon encountering a multitude of them in flight, feeding on overripe bananas. We both found the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory to be an absolutely enchanting experience. It is housed within a greenhouse-like garden environment where countless vividly colored butterflies flutter freely, engrossed in their daily activities. We recommend experimenting with your phone camera's slow-motion feature to capture the perfect shot of a butterfly taking flight!

Tennessee Williams Museum

One of Key West's most celebrated LGBTQ residents was the esteemed playwright, Tennessee Williams (1911-1983). He established his residence in Key West for a remarkable span of 34 years, leaving an indelible mark on the island, which is now commemorated in this captivating museum. We highly recommend a visit, as it also provides valuable insight into the island's rich LGBTQ historical narrative. The museum is dedicated to chronicling his prolific career through an extensive collection of photographs, first-edition plays, published books, rare newspaper articles, and archival video footage.
